canadainmapleleaf_copyFebruary 5, 2012: Making the Connection

As one of only 50 Unitarian congregations in the vast land that is Canada, we might feel isolated, were it not for our connections with one another through the Canadian Unitarian Council. In this service, we lift up our denominational inter-connections.

  • The Choir will sing.
  • Our offering will be shared with the West Central Women's Resource Centre.

Without the hundreds of hours a month of volunteer work by committee members, our church would simply not function. Yet committee work is also a venue for connection, an outlet for creativity and an ongoing course in communication skills.

Pat and Steve will discuss the roles committees play in the life of our congregation. Stay after the service for fun and discovery at the Committee Carnival!

Improvisation and Unitarian Universalism have more than a little bit in common. Both require an open mind and the willingness to explore past a pre-determined path, for example. Today, we look at the wondrous possibilities when faith and improvisation intersect. The Choir will sing.

February 26, 2012: Reflections on Lay Chaplaincy

Over the years, many members of our congregation have served as Lay Chaplains – people specifically selected and trained to perform rites of passage for non-members and others who are not necessarily Unitarian Universalists. Lay Chaplains are approved and registered by the Canadian Unitarian Council, and are licensed by the province. This morning we reflect on this long-standing program through which committed individuals create meaningful rituals that mark important life passages.

“I have an almost complete disregard of precedent, and a faith in the possibility of something better. It irritates me to be told how things have always been done. I defy the tyranny of precedent. I go for anything new that might improve the past.”

~ Clara Barton (born December 25, 1821)

UU Bits and Bytes

What Worship Means to UUs

In a religious tradition which does not require a belief in God, why worship at all? True, there are some among us who do not like to use that word because of its traditional connotations. But many of us choose to use it framed by the meaning of its Anglo Saxon roots: worth-shape is the act of focussing upon and clarifying what is of greatest worth — that which we wish to serve with our lives. For some, the word God broadly defined serves as a focus, especially when understood as the power of creativity within and among us, rather than a separate and omnipotent reality. For others, mindfulness of the depth of the present moment (as Buddhism teaches) anchors our lives. For most, that of worth which we come together to shape is at least partially framed by abstract values and principles such as compassion and justice.
