Webmaster Karin Carlson

karinwithbarbie.jpgKarin has been the Webmaster at the church since 2004, however she has been involved in the church since the early 1990s in a variety of ways, including former choir director and music director. She still participates in the musical life of the church by playing special music and hymns some Sundays, and occassionally running the sound board for services or special musical events and concerts.

She hails from the U.S., becoming a Candian Citizen in 2006. Her background and work experience can roughly be divided into two categories: musician (trombone, piano and vocals) and computer professional (software trainer, database developer, website designer, desktop publisher, etc.). She has a MOUS (Microsoft Office User Specialist) Certification, and has been training computer software in Winnipeg since 2000.

When she took on the UU Winnipeg website she rewrote the entire site to make it more accessible, easier to maintain, and more functional. Among the many features of this new site was the separation of content and formatting by incorporating Cascading Style Sheets. In 2009 the website was again completely rebuilt, this time using Joomla! technology. 2010 saw a major face lift as a new "template" was applied to the site, and several new technologies incorporated, including photo galleries, streaming audio, blogs, PayPal, and an embedded Amazon site.

Webside Pulpit

“The complexities of adult life get in the way of the truth. The great philosophers have always been able to clear away the complexities and see simple distinctions—simple once they are stated, vastly difficult before. If we are to follow them we too must be childishly simple in our questions—and maturely wise in our... replies.”

~Mortimer J. Adler (born December 28, 1902)

UU Bits and Bytes

UUism is Born

Much more evangelical than Unitarianism, which had a pronounced intellectual and urban ethos, Universalism spread across rural and small-town North America during the 19th and 20th centuries. Through their common emphasis on social action (such as the anti-slavery movement and the later suffragette and birth-control debates) and their evolving theologies of respect for the revelations of secular science, Unitarianism and Universalism drifted closer together, until their eventual official merger in 1961.
