Board Members

Craig Edwards, President (2009 – 2012)

Craig started attending the UU Church of Winnipeg in 1989 when he was looking for a spiritual home for himself and his young children, Cole and Carmen. He has taught in the RE and OWL programs, has been a Senior Youth Group advisor, and is a member of the OWL Oversight Committee. Craig has also been a member of the Fund Raising Committee, Chair of the Communications and Personnel committees, and recently chaired the Ministerial Search Committee. He has attended the CUUL School leadership seminar and feels strongly about taking advantage of the many CUC and UUA resources available to support the growth and development of our congregation. Craig is a Curriculum Consultant at Red River College where he collaborates with employers and faculty to develop and maintain high quality and relevant programs. Craig and his wife, Erin, were married in the church in September, 2004.

Bruce Roe, Vice President (2008 – 2011)

Bruce started attending the First UU Church of Winnipeg in 2001, along with his wife Margo Lane and their two (later three) young children. They were looking for a place for spiritual exploration, and found a community of caring and openness. Unable to convert his avocation of playing the tuba into a career, he instead works as a physician and administrator at St. Boniface Hospital.

Leslie Turnbull, Secretary (2008 – 2011)

Precipitated by a search to find her soul, Leslie began attending the Unitarian Universalist Church about five years ago, becoming a mem¬ber in 2007. She has been active for several years in the Church canvass, has participated in Building Your Own Theology and is a member of the 2/4 Chalice Circle. Leslie joined the Board in 2008. She is a partner in Viewpoints Research, a Winnipeg based public-opinion research company. Leslie is on the boards of Manitoba Hydro and the Manitoba School Improvement Project; she is also very active in the New Democratic Party. She lives with her husband Rob Hilliard, and her children Dan Orlikow and Gillian Turnbull. Painting and reading are favourite hobbies.

Lise Desrochers, Treasurer, Term (2010 – 2013)

Lise became a member of the Unitarian church in 2008. She took both BYOT1 and BYOT2, and is currently a member of the 2x4 Monday evening Chalice Circle. Lise wasn't sure what she wanted to do when she grew up, so she started her adult life with Katimavik, hiking the West Coast Trail, followed by travelling Europe, and studying Architecture. She eventually took her Bachelor in Business Admin at the University of Manitoba and became a member of the Certified General Accountants Association in 1989. Lise is currently the controller of Varian Medical Systems Canada. Lise is separated and an active team member of Beginning Experience (a peer grief support group). She has a son Ryan (19).

Laurie Marcella, Member at Large (2009 – 2012)

Laurie began attending the church in 2001 where she found the community she was seeking. Over the years, she has participated in many of the rich adult learning activities and discussion groups the church offers, has facilitated Build Your Own Theology on two occasions, and has enjoyed many years on the House Committee. Last year Laurie devoted many hours to the Ministerial Search Committee. Laurie recently retired for the second time from her role as the Parent/Infant Program Coordinator of Healthy Start for Mom & Me, but continues her involvement on the Board of the Attachment Network of Manitoba. She thoroughly enjoys precious time with her grandson and members of her own family and her step-family.

Carol Hussa Harvey, Member at Large (2010 – 2012)

Carol Hussa Harvey, whose parents were Unitarians, was encouraged to go to this church by her mother 28 years ago. This church is still a family affair: Carol and her husband are volunteers on Thursday mornings at the Winnipeg Harvest depot at the church. Both their daughters were married in this church; one daughter and son-in-law, along with their daughters, are active members. Carol is interested in church organization and management, and this is her third time on the Board. She has worked on several committees, most recently on Sunday Services. In addition to church activities, Carol volunteers at the University of Manitoba, where she is a Senior Scholar in the Department of Family Social Sciences.

Lyn Ferguson, Member at Large (2010 – 2013)

Lyn was raised in the First UU Church of Winnipeg, active in The Liberal Religious Youth in her teens and became involved again about ten years ago. She has been a part of several chalice groups, a number of Church committees, and served on the board for two years and the Minister Search committee to hire Reverend Millie. This summer she attended CUUL School in Saskatoon. One of her great joys is singing in the church choir. Lyn is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Manitoba. She is the daughter of Margaret and Bob Ferguson (church elders), spouse of Nick Martin (intrepid reporter), and the mother of Gill (18), studying at Trent University in Peterborough, and Chris (22) who, after graduation, is now beginning an 8 month bicycle trip around the perimeter of the U.S.

Webside Pulpit

“There are times, perhaps largely in the majority, when the material values press upon us and demand our attention. The average day is a busy day, and of necessity is concerned about bread and raiment. But there are other times when the roar of traffic is unheard, and in the solemn silence we find ourselves considering the things that are unseen and eternal.” ~ Julian C. Jaynes (born January 18, 1854)
