Winnipeg Arts Council Grant Awarded to UU Winnipeg Harvest Team

As part of Winnipeg’s Cultural Capital of Canada initiatives, the Unitarian Winnipeg Harvest Team has been awarded funds for a collaborative arts project under the “With Art” program. The funding is designed to link community groups with local artists who then collaborate to define what the art project will be.

Headed up by Brian Klowack and Margaret Burnip, and help from Laurie Marcella the list of 14 possible artists has been reviewed and there is now a shortlist of three possible candidates. Once an artist is selected members from the Winnipeg Harvest team will meet and share ideas on how to transform their Winnipeg Harvest experience into some kind of art.

At this point in time the outcome of the artistic undertaking is wide open as so much depends on the artist’s focus and process. The project could be a physical art piece or performance based art. Part of the criteria used by Brian and team in short- listing an artist was their stated awareness of social issues, the potential for community involvement in the creation of the art project, and the potential of the art project reaching a wider audience in a teaching, or awareness raising capacity.

Whatever the outcome- this is an exciting opportunity for our Winnipeg Harvest volunteers and patrons. We look forward to sharing more as the project unfolds and to find ways to celebrate and bring profile to the community and their good work along the way.
