Youth Group in 2010-2011

E-mail Print PDF

A plan to meet the needs of our youth, and create a vibrant, active youth group.

The Committee for Religious Exploration has responded to a number of factors over the 2009-10 church year: changes in the age groupings for Our Whole Lives (OWL) for youth, the size and ages of our youth population, the six components of a balanced youth program, and how to best support those who work with youth.

For the 2010-11 church year, there will be one youth group, for those 12 to 16. Nine to twelve registered youth are anticipated. This is a healthy number for a viable group, and makes discussions, games, projects and activities more fun and meaningful.

There are opportunities through both curriculum and the larger church community for Community Building, Youth-Adult Relations, and Leadership. The Worship and Social Action components flow primarily from the youth and their advisors. In addition to our local program, youth are invited to participate in regional and national youth events, which also incorporate all six elements.  There will a Youth Con in Winnipeg from October 15-17.  Youth from the Western Region (Alberta to Thunder Bay) are invited.

In order to support our adult allies, the committee will offer Basic Youth Advisor Training early in 2011. This 15-hour weekend workshop, in turn, supports our youth.

We are grateful to all who have taken the time to provide feedback over the year about how the program has been working, and hope that these changes provide exciting opportunities for our youth to truly flourish within our UU community.

“I have an almost complete disregard of precedent, and a faith in the possibility of something better. It irritates me to be told how things have always been done. I defy the tyranny of precedent. I go for anything new that might improve the past.”

~ Clara Barton (born December 25, 1821)
