Picture Book World Religions

For children ages 5 to 7 by the end of 2010

Children are introduced to three religions through stories and activities. Each sessions revolves around a picture book.

The curriculum by Kate Tweedie Covey covers

  • Hinduism
  • Islam
  • Buddhism

Method of delivery

Each session includes the following elements:

  • Entering Activity
  • Sharing Circle
    • A picture book is read during this time
  • Activities
    • May include a craft, game, guided meditation, art, etc.
  • Closing
  • Optional snack suggestions

The program opens with a session on Sacred Places, progresses through stories from Hinduism, Islam and Buddhism, and closes with a session on The United Nations Convention on the Right of the Child.

Teachers

This program requires two adults each Sunday:

  • One Lead Teacher
  • One Helper

Leaders are provided with background information to enhance their own faith development and level of comfort with the subject.

In order to share the load, we’re looking for a team of about six, who can share the Leader and Helper roles, as they’re comfortable. Teams may prefer to co-lead, planning and leading the session equally.

Teachers commit to around 8 to 10 Sundays between September and late May, and work with their team mates to create a schedule that works for all.  For more about Teaching Teams, click here.
