Great Women Composers Series
Have you ever wondered why most of the great composers are men? Can you name any women composers? Are you interested in learning more about women composers?
If these questions pique your interest, then you are invited to join Marilyn Brooke in a series of four presentations on Western woman composers, most of whom have been re-discovered in the 1980’s and 1990’s with the advent of feminist scholarship in many fields, including music.
The composers are:
- Elizabeth-Claude Jacquet de la Guerre (1666 or 1667-1729),
- Marianne Martinez (1744-1812),
- Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel (1805-1847) and
- Amy Beach (1867-1944).
Marilyn will give a talk about each composer and a demonstration of her keyboard music. There will also be time for questions and discussion about the composer and the broader issues at each session.
