Facilitator: Martin Wilson

  • 10 Thursdays: January 13 - March 17, 2011
  • 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. in the living room (at the Unitarian Universalist church, 603 Wellington Crescent)
  • Fee: $20, due at the first meeting. We want to include everyone, regardless of income. Please contact Rev. Millie Rochester at 474-1261 to discuss financial assistance.

“Tao Te Ching” has been perhaps the major oriental spiritual text since Lao Tzu (570-490 BCE) wrote it. Here is a chance to read and discuss it.

A variety of translations can be found at: http://www.duhtao.com/ or http://www.vl-site.org/taoism/ttc-list.html or you can bring your own version.

Volunteer Facilitator: Martin Wilson is a relative newcomer to the Unitarian Universalist church of Winnipeg. He has read and contemplated the “Tao Te Ching” for 25 years.

A Brief History of Universalism

The doctrine of universalism has appeared occasionally in Christian theology since the early church. Origen of Alexandria (c.185-c.254) and Gregory of Nyssa (c.335 – after 394) are among its more famous exponents, although both spoke more in terms of hope and possibility than assured doctrine. In 1793, Universalism became a separate Christian denomination in the United States, which was eventually called the Universalist Church of America (UCA).

“The complexities of adult life get in the way of the truth. The great philosophers have always been able to clear away the complexities and see simple distinctions—simple once they are stated, vastly difficult before. If we are to follow them we too must be childishly simple in our questions—and maturely wise in our... replies.”

~Mortimer J. Adler (born December 28, 1902)
