Jefferson Edits Bible

E-mail Print PDF

While working in the White House, President Jefferson set out to edit four gospels. He was so convinced the Bible’s true message was hidden that he cut up the pages and reedited it. He wanted to do away with the artificial stuff and restore the genuine doctrines. Some of the controversial changes were removing the virgin birth and the resurrection. He wanted the authentic message of Jesus, such as absolute love, forgiveness, and service rather than the miracle of annunciation.

Forrest Church’s father was an incoming Senator in the 40’s, as was the custom at the time, on the day of his swearing in was presented with a copy of the Jefferson Bible. Two years later, he gave the copy to Forrest. This gift opened the door for a vocation in religion. Forrest Church, until his death last year, was the Unitarian Universalist minister of the All Souls Church in New York City.

One of the new books purchased last year for our church library is The Jefferson Bible, The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth, with an introduction by Forrest Church.

“It matters little to what pole of doctrine the intellect swings, if the heart hangs unpenetrated and untouched.”

~ Edwin H. Chapin (born December 29, 1814)
