The Best Ways to Communicate

We all want to make sure that as many people as possible in our church know about events we promote. So how can you go about spreading the word?

Though the audience is “captured” on Sunday morning, we can’t all use the announcement time without affecting the careful planning of the service leaders. So here are some suggestions:

  1. Send an This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to place on our website, or use the Submit an Article form.
  2. Send an This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it no later than Thursday noon, to be included in our weekly All-church e-mail.
  3. Submit material to the editor, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , for publication in the Communicator. Our newsletter comes out monthly; the deadline for submissions is the second Monday of every month.
  4. Send an This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it (or hand-written note) no later than Thursday noon any week to have your announcement placed in the order of service announcement section.
    • But be brief and considerate, please – we are limited to one page of announcements.
    • If the announcement is in the Communicator, do not repeat the whole announcement in the order of service. Use one or two lines to refer people to the Communicator.
    • Know that to keep within space limitations and to keep our excessive paper costs down, the office administrator will edit announcements.
    • It will not always be possible to put repeated announcements by committees in the order of service each week.
  5. Place a poster on the bulletin board in the foyer.
  6. As a last resort, the first person to approach the Sunday Service Coordinator is allowed one minute for a special announcement relating to church events. There is also one minute available for an announcement of clear Social Responsibility interest. Please use these with care and for the purpose they are intended. (That is, please don’t try to stretch a social announcement into a social responsibility theme just to get airtime.)
  7. Finally, and again as last resort, the Service Coordinator will read a very brief handwritten announcement for you. However, the Service Coordinators reserve the right to limit announcements so they do not overrun their time-frame.

What Worship Means to UUs

In a religious tradition which does not require a belief in God, why worship at all? True, there are some among us who do not like to use that word because of its traditional connotations. But many of us choose to use it framed by the meaning of its Anglo Saxon roots: worth-shape is the act of focussing upon and clarifying what is of greatest worth — that which we wish to serve with our lives.

“There are times, perhaps largely in the majority, when the material values press upon us and demand our attention. The average day is a busy day, and of necessity is concerned about bread and raiment. But there are other times when the roar of traffic is unheard, and in the solemn silence we find ourselves considering the things that are unseen and eternal.” ~ Julian C. Jaynes (born January 18, 1854)
