Help Sound Reinforcement 10 Commandments for Using Mics

10 Commandments for Using Mics

E-mail Print PDF

These instructions are for anyone using a microphone at a service, especially the pulpit mic.

  1. Always use a mic, even when you don’t think you need to. Some people can’t hear you without one, and we use the micpulpit mics to record the service.
  2. Before the service, choose and set up your document stand (the wooden stand to make the pulpit higher or lower). Be sure that the mic gooseneck is not touching the stand and will not be in your way when turning pages or reading your material.
  3. Adjust the gooseneck for the Pulpit mic so that the microphone is pointing at your mouth. During the service, if someone moves the mic for themselves, please move it back. It should always be pointed at your mouth.
  4. Before the service, do a quick sound check. Do not blow or tap on the mic. Speak as you will be speaking during the service.
  5. Inform the sound person if you need a mic away from the pulpit and a hand-held mic can be made available for you.
  6. When using the handheld mic, do not point the mic at the white speakers in the ceiling as this may cause feedback.
  7. When adjusting a microphone or holding a handheld mic, do not handle the front of the mic (no tapping, cupping, grabbing, etc.), but rather handle by the base of the microphone.
  8. Project your voice when speaking into a mic.
  9. Move your body for soft/loud speaking: If you need to whisper, lean in to (get closer to) the mic a little. If you need to shout, back up or turn to one side.

  10. Do not make “asides” to the congregation off the mic. If you turn your head left or right, move your body slightly to compensate in the other direction, so you are always speaking into the mic.

What Worship Means to UUs

In a religious tradition which does not require a belief in God, why worship at all? True, there are some among us who do not like to use that word because of its traditional connotations. But many of us choose to use it framed by the meaning of its Anglo Saxon roots: worth-shape is the act of focussing upon and clarifying what is of greatest worth — that which we wish to serve with our lives.

“There are times, perhaps largely in the majority, when the material values press upon us and demand our attention. The average day is a busy day, and of necessity is concerned about bread and raiment. But there are other times when the roar of traffic is unheard, and in the solemn silence we find ourselves considering the things that are unseen and eternal.” ~ Julian C. Jaynes (born January 18, 1854)
