If you have done sound before and just need a checklist please read the Sunday Service Sound Checklist.

Before the Service: Prepare the Equipment

Unlock and Turn On Equipment

  1. Plug in and turn on the Amplifier in the foyer behind the plant.
  2. Unlock the sound booth.
  3. Make sure the Amplifier is set to the OFF position and turn on the power bar.
  4. Pull the yellow “To Speakers” sliders down all the way.
  5. Turn on the Amplifier.

Optional: Set Up Microphone for Recording Music/Choir/Hymns

  1. Get a PVM 480 mic (the skinny ones – we have three) and clip from the mic box in the cabinet, and a mic cable (or two if you have to daisy-chain them). Get a mic stand from behind the cabinet.
  2. Set up the mic stand. Suggested locations: if there is room, the middle of the sanctuary (about 3 rows back) is ideal. You want to get far enough away so you're not recording any one person in particular, without recording a lot of audience noise. If you want a room sound, set up the mic(s) by the post in the back by the sound booth, or beside the post on the opposite side at the back.
  3. For mics in front of the choir: Even though we don't have true stereo on our board, setting up two mics is nice because you have a better chance of getting sound from both sides of the choir. Try not to point the mic directly at one singer. Often mics are set up pointing at the oppisite end of the choir, for example, the mic on the right (as you are facing the choir) will be pointing at the left side, and vice versa. Or set up both mics in the middle of the choir and point one left, one right. The best thing to do if you can is to come to a choir rehearsal and set up mics, and practice recording to see where the optimal positioning is.
  4. For mics at the back of the room only: Raise the mic stand as high as it will go and point the mic toward the front of the room, over the heads of the congregation, in the direction of the center of the stage where the choir will stand.
  5. For a mic(s) at the back of the room, run the mic cable(s) back to the board and plug it/them into the board directly, replacing the XLR (mic) input for that channel.
  6. For a mic at the front of the room, plug into any channel in the panels to the sides of the stage (1-4, 5 or 6, but not 7 or 8).
  7. Configure that channel to record but not to amplify through the speaker:
    1. Press the Mix/Sub button down to the “SUB” position. This is very important, as it removes the mic signal from the speakers, so it is only going to the recorder.
    2. Press the “On” button down.
    3. Turn the Gain (red knob on top) to the 12:00 position.
    4. Turn the green “Aux 3” knob all the way to the right.

It is important to not record through the mics at the back of the room (or the choir mics) and the pulpit/chalice mics at the same time. Doing this will cause a slight delay in the recording (put on the headset to hear this effect). When the pulpit and/or chalice mics are up (meaning the faders/sliders are up), pull the others down, and vice-versa.

UU Bits and Bytes

Civil Rights and Social Justice

Unitarian Universalists have historically been closely involved with civil rights and social justice movements. John Haynes Holmes, a UU minister, was among the founders of both the NAACP and the ACLU, chairing the latter for a time. Approximately 20% of Unitarian Universalist ministers marched with Martin Luther King, Jr., from Selma, Alabama, to Montgomery. UU ministers have been performing same-sex unions since at least the late 1960s.

In 1995 the UUA helped establish the International Council of Unitarians and Universalists (ICUU).

Webside Pulpit

“A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”

~Albert Einstein
