Website Updates for January 2012

E-mail Print PDF

winter_windows2Hello everyone!

A brief update on some changes to the website, and other news.

Front Page Changes

You might have noticed (how could you not?) the spiffy rotating news gallery on the front page. Hopefully this will highlight important announcements etc.

Speaking of announcements, two items to bring those more to the top of the heap: Announcements now has its own menu tab, and its own place in the gallery on the front page. (If you have something for the website, Announcement or otherwise, please This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , and please leave me at least four days to post it).

New Logon Request Form

I've revamped the method by which you can request a logon ID and password. It's now a form which does not require that you have an email program on your computer.

Church Member Contacts Through the Website

Slowly I am adding to the list of people that you can contact through our secure, "never shows the email addresses" website forms. If you would like to be included in this project to make it easier for us to contact each other, please use my form to send me an email. Please note that if you have your email on the website already, unless it is a @uuwinnipeg.mb.ca address, I will make a contact form for you and remove the email from the web article.

The benefits to this system:

  • By default email addresses are always hidden so this is a much safer method of making emailing each other available on/from the website (rather than posting the email address directly, which can produce unwanted advertising email, or, "spam").
  • You can have access to emailing any member from any public computer, even at the library.
  • If your email address changes, I only have to update it in one place, so the possibility of "old" and incorrect emails lingering on our site is eliminated.
  • If you go to a UU conference or other event, you can point people you meet there to this site in order to contact you, rather than handing out your emails.

My goal is to have all our membership that uses email on this system by the end of 2012. Let me know what you think of this initiative.

Tag Cloud

We are starting to add "meta tags" or "keywords" to each article, to populate the Tag Cloud (in the right or left sidebar). Click on a keyword that interests you and see other articles that share the same keyword. Please note that this is not the same as the search bar, at the top right of the site banner, which is by far a better tool for searching for content on the site.

Upcoming Store

This spring we will see a store on our website, featuring our fabulous sweatshirts, some books and CDs, and of course our rockin' new chalice jewelry, unique to us in all of Canada the world. Stay tuned!

Peace,

Karin

Webmaster Goals for 2011-2012

E-mail Print PDF

As we have done every year at the AGM, committee chairpersons—including me—wrote and delivered our goals for the year. It's interesting to see what has happened since last year, and revamp some of the old goals to put them on next year's list. (Somehow this is reminiscent of my daily to-do lists...)

Here is an abbreviated version. You can find the "formal" version here.

Accomplished Last Year

  • Done from last year's goals: PayPal, Amazon store, new template on site
  • Added component that automatically displays icons next to text for external links, email links, pdf documents, etc.
  • Major improvements in additional website content including pictures of the grounds and house and sanctuary for rental inquires.
  • Added the church to Google Maps, with a company page that includes contact information, pictures of the inside and grounds, hours, a brief description of the congregation, etc.
  • Added help articles, new links to other web resources, streaming audio (in place of podcasting): http://uuwinnipeg.mb.ca/communication/website-updates/589-streaming-audio-is-here
  • Added images for every Sunday Service, and a mechanism that displays those articles plus featured blog posts, announcements and other articles, in a gallery on the front page.
  • Added Website Submission Content Guidelines.
  • Added two photo galleries, including one of the building of the deck.
  • Disabled self-registration on the website due to spam. Instead, people request registration in an email to me.
  • Stopped posting streaming audio of services due to concerns about privacy and policy issues.
  • Created a Facebook Group, and a Facebook page which will replace the group.
  • Added an iPod/tablet interface for the website which automatically senses that the user is using a device and switches templates. Added custom buttons to main screen with our chalice etc.
  • Added a sound system schedule that the members of the AV team and sound system people can add to themselves to schedule sound techs for the year. Although it doesn't directly fall under my mandate, I want to include that I also facilitated sound system training, and participated in a sound system inventory.

To Do in the 2011-2012 Year

  • To do from last year's goals: I still need to present training for the website to the community. Also, I'll revisit how announcements are handled on the site vs. church email, and poll the community to see how people are using the site.
  • This year I hope to develop a policy document for content on the website, which will address topics like ownership of site content, responsibility for content, inclusion of possibly private information, etc.
  • Develop the existing form-based contact form component of the website, to include most members of the church. I also want to gradually phase out actual email addresses on the site and replace them with links to the contact form, with the exception of church office and committees and staff that have dedicated email addresses.
  • Participate (with other members of the Communications committee and with input from the Board) in the development of a church communication plan.
  • Begin posting streaming audio of some services.
  • Develop a Website Style Guide, which would include information on how to maintain the website, presentation and formatting elements, colors, etc.
  • Develop areas for several committees to help them share files.
  • Post and/or distribute reports on site traffic and monetization results (Amazon Associates etc.) for the site.
  • Keep time records of what I do each month so that I can be more accountable to the congregation and board with what I am doing and how long it takes me.
  • Phase out the Facebook Group in favour of the page.
  • Expand "Community News" area on the website for non-church specific events that members want to publicize/share. Also Members Corner to feature art, poetry, etc.
  • Provide workshops on the website through Adult Programming.
  • Add to/update the help articles on the site for training for site use and for sound system training.
  • Add a UU Gift Shop on the Website. With assistance from the Fundraising Committee, plans are already in the works to add a gift shop to sell our UU stuff, including custom jewelry based on our chalice that Nancy Gilbert designed for us. Hopefully this will be fully functional by Christmas. The shopping cart system is being installed by Karin at no additional charge to the church, and will use the already-in-place PayPal connection to our bank account. [Update: The shopping cart software is installed, and will be functional in November.]
  • Add keyword "tag clouds" to the website. [This is done - look in the right column of the site.]
  • Work with the Library Committee to add an online catalog of the books in our UU Church Library to the website. [This is done - here.]

karin at beach 2011smHi everybody! You might see some strange, new, exciting, or seemingly-misplaced content on our website over the coming weeks. Summer is the time of recreation with the UU website, and this summer I have lots of exciting things planned for our cyber home.

Please be patient, and feel free to ask me any questions or make suggestions. I'd love to know what you think.

The Online UU Library Catalog is Here!

UU Library Catalog on Website

100_0490Thanks to the industriousness and vision of Marilyn Brooke, our Library Committee chair, we now have a UU Library Catalog online!

How does this work?

Go to the Home Tab, Our Libraries, UU Library Catalog (here) to find the book you are interested in. You then visit the physical library in the "house" part of the church, and check out your book. There are instructions in the library.

What if I want to buy the book?

You are in luck! The UU Library on our website has a link to Amazon.ca. You will automatically be directed there with a link to our chuch account (and the church gets about 5% of the sale). And it doesn't cost you any more.

If you want to do additional shopping, try our Amazon store, at the bottom of every page in the website.

Thank you Marilyn for your hard work.

An RE Library is coming in the future.

Website Improvements July 2011

taptheme

Good sunny summer afternoon, everyone!

A few improvements on our site to know about.

Help Articles Reorganized

First, the Help menu has two new areas of interest: "Using the Website" and "Article Submission Help".

One thing that you can do with our new (going on 3 years now I think -- maybe 4 -- but relatively new) website is make any article on the site into a PDF (you can also print and email a link to an article). Find out how in this article: How to Save, Email or Print Articles.

iPhone Interface Installed

A new, shiny iPhone interface is installed. You have to have a cell phone to browse to it, but here's a picture of the basic interface. What I loved about making this: my own shiny buttons! What I didn't like: super-short labels.

A few glitches have come up. Blackberry seems to not display the initial screen of buttons correctly (or at least mine doesn't), but they still work. Also, the rotating image gallery on the front page doesn't show. I will figure these things out, or a workaround, since the info in that gallery is really important.

I've ordered an iPod touch, which I think will allow me to "see" this for myself and I'll be better able to troubleshoot it.

Contacts Area Expansion

Last for today, let me remind everyone that there is a very useful feature of our site that we are not currently using to its fullest. We have a contacts setup where any visitor can send an email to staff (and some members) using a form, instead of clicking on an email link. Church Staff are here; church members are here (right now you have to log in to the site to see the second list, however I'd like to change that).

  • The email address can be hidden (thereby protecting the recipient from most spam), and the email still goes to that address. Currently church staff emails are not hidden, members' emails are.
  • The sender can send this email without having Outlook or other software installed on their computer, which is good for:
    • those who use Hotmail
    • those who are travelling and are not at their own computer
    • those who are at work or a public computer such as at the library
  • The sender can opt to have a copy sent to themselves.
  • The contact area has space for additional information, like a picture of the person (remember our church directory with pictures?) or office hours or meeting times, in the case of committee chairs.
  • This information is available anywhere there is Internet, which would be very handy I think for contacting church members when your directory is not at hand.

If you would like to be included in this directory, or have comments, please send me an email.

Thanks for reading! Stay cool!
