Property Development Update

Almost time to celebrate the new deck

As soon as we hit warmer spring weather we hope to have the new railings attached and then commemorate the deck with a celebration event. We hope to celebrate on Sunday May15th - but will need to confirm this date based on installing the railings as soon as the snow is off the deck. Depending on how our budget stretches we will also plan to do some light landscaping on either side of the deck by the house and hopefuly install some brickwork or patio stones at the base of the stairs.

QUESTION.... Does anyone have a good supply of patio stones or bricks they want to donate to the deck project?
Got bricks?

Lois and I are going to give the property project and fund raising a little rest for the balance of 2011 but we know that it also time to start thinking about some longer-term planning for the proposed memorial garden area.

Are there any keeners who would like to help research design options for this project ?

We would like to begin gathering design elements and in 2012 engage in dialogue with the congregation to land on a design for our memorial garden area.

Thanks again to everyone for the ongoing support.

A Big Success at Fundraising Dinner

Thank you everyone for the great support at the Holly Jolly Bollywood Dinner. It was a festive evening with great food and lots of people having fun together - and who could forget the sight of Bruce Roe or Bromley Basford in their delightful sari wraps!

More than 85 people attended and we raised almost $900 from the silent auction and a total of almost $3,000 from the event. These funds go towards the completion of our beautiful new deck. As soon as we hit warmer spring weather we hope to have the new railings attached and then commemorate the deck with a celebration event. Depending on how our budget stretches we will also do some light landscaping on either side of the deck by the house and hopefuly install some brickwork or patio stones at the base of the stairs.

Property Development Update on Our Deck

Our deck has been lovingly constructed by a dedicated group of volunteers who have been working most weekends since the middle of summer. This work of art is made of Brazilian hardwood, has no screws visible on the surface and fancy finishing details - all of this takes time and we are almost ready to celebrate the completion. At time of writing this submission we are just waiting to finish the railings.

We need to raise approximately $3,000 to finish the deck so please join us on Wednesday January 5th at Charisma Restaurant for a evening of Bollywood delights and an East Indian dinner buffet.

Read our announcement and consider this event when planning your holiday season entertainment options or gift giving!

As soon as the deck is finished - we will celebrate and give a big cheer for our volunteer construction crew!

Photo Gallery is here.

We have a great group of volunteers lead by Peter Hill Carroll building our deck. We hope to see this work completed in the month of September in time for the Western District Conference in October.

Big Thanks go out to Peter along with Don E Bailey, Kris Breckman, Rob Lowe, Jim Watson, Harry Peters, Walter Henderson, Mike Tuttle, Krishna Nimmagadda, David Candin, Noah Star and apologies for anyone we may have missed. We can not do these projects without the tremendous support of volunteers and your time is much appreciated.

Once the deck is complete we will hold a special celebration - stay tuned for more on this.

Deck Project and Fundraising - Almost There!

We are delighted to commence plans for building our new deck on the north side of the foyer. The deck will be a lovely addition to our living space.

To date we have raised almost 75% of our $20,000 goal. We still need to raise the final $5000 and one member has come forward with a $2500 donation challenge asking to be matched by other donations. A few people have already committed towards this challenge - please consider joining with a donation to help us reach the goal.

Next steps for the deck project include obtaining the city permits, getting final quotes on materials and Peter Hill Carroll is ready to start levelling the area and then putting in the piles for the deck foundation.

Volunteers Needed For Deck Building

Volunteers Needed to help build our deck - there is a job for everyone !

Saturdays In Late June And Early July

Mark your calendars for some Saturday work time in support of building our deck in late June and early July.

More details to come soon on specific jobs and dates. For now we are gathering names of people who would like to help.

We need help with:

  1. General work crew roles do not require specific carpentry skills - just the physical ability to assist, move materials, lift a wheel barrow etc.
  2. Carpentry crew to work closely with Peter Hill Carroll and build the deck
  3. Support team to help with water, sandwiches, and light clean up around the site

Building Our Deck This Spring - Update for Feb. 2010

E-mail Print PDF

Plans underway for building our deck – Spring of this year !!

January 24th after church we hosted an information session on the plans for developing our property – one project at a time. This year our goal is to build the deck off of the sanctuary foyer doors. This will give us access to the backyard and extend the living space of our foyer in good weather as well as enhance our rental revenue potential.

We need to raise funds to build the deck which will cost between $15,000 and $20,000 depending on the type of materials used. Each of the projects we undertake with property development needs to be funded independently of our donations towards the operating budget each year. At some point in the future- when we have less debt or a larger endowment fund we may be in a position to look at other funding options for the larger development projects like the parking lot. But for now we need to go one project at a time and raise the money as we go. Our ability to proceed with the smaller projects is completely based on our energy and commitment to support each project and we will only go forward based on what we are able to support.

We each have a role to play as members of this community and generous contributors of stewardship, finances and sweat equity. Please consider what your gift to this project could be.

Deck Fund Raising Project Update March 2010

E-mail Print PDF

Deck Fund Raising Project

February saw a successful launch of the Deck building fund raising which is our next Property Development project. We have a goal of $20,000 to raise by May of this year in order to build a deck off the foyer doors to the backyard. There are many ways to help support this project.

  1. On-line Auction - send you friends and family to our website at www.uuwinnipeg.mb.ca and go to Quick Links in the top right corner. There are more than 40 wonderful eclectic items available for a steal of a price if you get your bid in before March 13th. We are hoping the auction will raise at least a couple of thousand dollars - but really need your help sending people to the site.
  2. Buy a Board - raising funds by selling minature boards for $100, $50 or $25 dollars
  3. Special donations - we are counting on a number of generous people to step forward with more sizable donations. Without this type of gifting we will not reach our goal.
  4. Special events like Sunday lunches and raffles. Our launch on Feb 17th was a fun lunch with some raffle prizes. The next lunch is planned for April 11th.

Our Property Development projects can only go forward as we raise funds for each project. We know that the deck is a positive contribution to our church. It will give us great access to the back yard as well as enhance rental revenue. We hope you are able to generously support the project to the best of your abilities. Thanks everyone for a good start.
