The Robsons-Farmer Second Thursday Lunch Group

Unitarian Church dining room, 12 noon, September 9, 2010

Guest Speaker: Syva-Lee Wildenmann, Program Director of Rupert's Land Caregiver Service which supports family caregivers of elderly persons. Services include respite, transportation, support groups, community education, information and referrals.

Bring your lunch. Coffee and tea will be provided.

This is a day-time program of our church, which occurs on the second Thursday of each month from September to June. Participants bring a bag lunch, while convenors provide tea, coffee and dessert. Dessert contributions are always welcome, and a silver collection is taken to help defray costs. After lunch and conversation, we present an invited speaker. Topics range from informational to educational and on occasion include musical entertainment. Please join us at noon on the "second Thursday" of any given month. Attendance is on a drop-in basis; no sign-up is required. All are welcome, and we look forward to your company!

Share the Plate Coming Soon!

E-mail Print PDF

Beginning in October, we will, once a month, share the non-designated portion of the Sunday morning offering, as a means of strengthening our connections with the wider community and living our principles. To qualify, recipients must be non-political, local, registered non-profit organizations whose principles are congruent with Unitarian Universalism, and for whom our donations would make a significant difference.

After the service on September 12, the congregation will select the first three recipients, from the list below. Come and be part of this important initiative!

  1. Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan Provides help to educate women in Afghanistan
  2. Hands of Hope Provides furniture and household goods to people in need
  3. Immigrant Refugee Community of Manitoba Integrates newcomer families into the wider community
  4. Rossbrook House A neighbourhood centre for children and youth in Winnipeg's inner-city
  5. Andrew Street Family Centre A multi-service family and neighbourhood support centre
  6. GOAL (a program of Elmwood Resource Community Centre) An adult literacy program
  7. Boys and Girls Club Provides a safe, supportive place for children and youth
  8. Friends of the Winnipeg Library Raises money to benefit the library
  9. The West Central Women’s Resource Centre Empowers women to help themselves, their families and their community

UU Bits and Bytes

Civil Rights and Social Justice

Unitarian Universalists have historically been closely involved with civil rights and social justice movements. John Haynes Holmes, a UU minister, was among the founders of both the NAACP and the ACLU, chairing the latter for a time. Approximately 20% of Unitarian Universalist ministers marched with Martin Luther King, Jr., from Selma, Alabama, to Montgomery. UU ministers have been performing same-sex unions since at least the late 1960s.

In 1995 the UUA helped establish the International Council of Unitarians and Universalists (ICUU).
